Nabetsuru Rock

This rock is a symbol of Okushiri Island. The rock, formed by erosion, including wave breezes, convey the beauty of natural forms. The name comes from its donut-shaped form that looks like a handle of a pot (string). The plant (tree) that grows on the top of the rock is called "berberis amurensis,” whose Japanese name comes from the idea that even snakes will not climb it because of the prickles on the branches and leaves. The plant bears small flowers and red fruits. The rock is one of the top photo shooting locations on Okushiri Island. It is lit up at night, creating a different, dreamy scenery from the daytime with the fire of the squid fishing boats.

Miyatsu Bentengu

Miyatsu Bentengu was built in 1831 by fishermen in the Miyatsu District. The Benzaiten god was enshrined with the prayer for maritime safety and a good catch in fishing. It is believed that the remains of Okhotsk culture around the 9th century and the Ainu fort and ritual site from around the 16th and 17th centuries were built on this steep rocky mountain. It has long been seen as a crucial point on the island. There are 164 steps to the shrine. The current shrine was newly built in 1970. It has a vermilion roof that looks alluring against the dark blue Okushiri Strait.
